Chetham's Library and The Chetham Society

Chetham's Library was founded in 1653 and is the oldest public library in the English-speaking world. It is an independent charity and remains open to readers and visitors free of charge.

The Chetham Society is the oldest history society in North-West England and was one of the first in Britain. It was founded in Manchester in 1843 by a group of gentlemen, of 'a literary and historical turn', who wanted to promote interest in, and access to, the rich historical source material of the region. The formal object of the Society was therefore to publish 'Remains Historical and Literary connected with the Palatine Counties of Lancashire and Chester', although since the 1870s the literary element has been dropped and the work of the Society has concentrated entirely upon the publication of history.

The Manchester Museum provides access to about six million items from every continent of the globe. Butterflies and carvings from India; birds and bark-cloth from the Pacific; live frogs and ancient pottery from America; fossils and native art from Australia; mammals and ancient Egyptian craftsmanship from Africa; plants, coins and minerals from Europe; art from past civilisations of the Mediterranean; and beetles, armour and archery from Asia.

The origins of the Museum lie in the great quest for knowledge and improvement in medicine, science and art that has been the hallmark of the world’s first industrial city. This was fuelled by the wealth created by Manchester’s international trade in textiles from the late eighteenth century.

Lancashire County Museum Service Lancashire County Museum Service looks after more than 150,000 fascinating objects from around the county. These include Natural History, Geology, Furniture, Maritime History, Textile Machinery, Local History, Collections of Childhood and works of art by Lancashire artists. These are housed within seven historic and diverse buildings each with a changing programme of temporary exhibitions and events.
